Birth Worker Branding

Frequently asked questions

When do you go on call for my birth?

On call starts two weeks before your due date. You should ABSOLUTELY call me any time before that if your labor starts earlier than expected. What on call means is that I will have my phone with me and turned on 24/7. My camera bag is packed and ready to go at a moment's notice and I will not be travelling farther than an hour radius from my home so that I can guarantee to reach you within 2 hours of you contacting me.

What can I expect when you arrive at my place of birth?

My goal as your photographer is to be as quiet and discreet as possible. If you are laboring without an epidural, I will quietly enter your birth room and make sure that you can see that I have arrived without making a big announcement. If you are birthing at home, I will let myself in so that you are not disturbed by my arrival. On the other hand, if you do have an epidural, I am happy to chat with you as I get my camera gear ready. I do not use flash, as I feel that it can be very distracting to a laboring mother. Instead, I might turn on a light in an adjacent room or bring in some soft lamps.

Why is birth photography so expensive?

The on-call nature of birth photography can be very demanding. I am always ready to leave at a moment's notice. Sometimes I miss birthdays and anniversaries and holidays. Occasionally a birth can last 24 hours or more and that means I might be away from home for days, sometimes requiring a babysitter for my kids.

I am also comfortable in all kinds of birth situations in which other photographers might feel squeamish. I also have experience working in low light conditions, which take some creativity to navigate. Editing may take a day or more, as low light photos often require a lot of work to bring out the best quality.

How long does it take to receive the final photos?

It may take up to two weeks for you to receive all of your photos. I will probably take the day after your birth to rest and recover, but I try to get one or two photos edited by the second day to give you a sneak peek. I know how eager you are to see them and get to share photos of your baby with friends and family!

What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

A lifestyle newborn session is relaxed and flexible, I am there to capture photos of your family in the comfort of your own home with minimal posing. We usually take our time, because life with newborns is unpredictable. I plan to be there up to 2 hours because spit up and blowout diapers are just inevitable. You book your session whenever YOU are feeling ready, that can be a few days or a few weeks after baby is born... everyone recovers from birth at their own rate. As a childbirth educator and doula, I love lifestyle photography because I understand that it respects and honors the recovery process and there is no pressure on the family to have it all together. Speaking of no pressure... don't even think about getting your house tidy and clean. All I need is a corner of a room with some good natural light. I can move stuff out of the way if needed when I get there. It's not about capturing perfection, it's about documenting this beautiful new time in your lives.

What is a Fresh 48 Session?

Just as it sounds, Fresh 48 photos take place within the first 48 hours of giving birth to your little one. I will come to your place of birth, whether that be the hospital or your home, and capture you and your newborn in the earliest hours of their life. For some families, a fresh 48 is a good compromise for those who don't want a photographer at their birth but do want to document this transformative experience. Having a window of time gives parents a little bit of time to recover after the birth and freshen up a little bit before  getting pictures taken.
